Keep the Laughter Going: How to Practice Laughter Yoga on Your Own

There’s something really special about laughing in a group. The energy, the connection, the way it feels to let go together—it can be surprisingly powerful.

And then you go home.

Maybe you feel lighter, calmer, more present… but also a little unsure. How do I keep this going on my own? Can I really just… laugh by myself?

The answer is yes. Gently, imperfectly, and in your own way—yes, you can.

And the beautiful thing is, it doesn’t have to look the same as it did in a group. In fact, your personal laughter practice can become something deeply supportive, grounding, and even a little playful in your everyday life.

Start Small (Really Small)

You don’t need to set aside a full session or force big, booming laughter.

Start with 30 seconds.

A soft “ha… ha…”A quiet smile that turns into a breathy laugh. Even just the intention to laugh counts.

It might feel a bit funny at first—that’s completely normal. Laughter yoga often begins as a practice, not a reaction. But your body doesn’t really know the difference. Simulated laughter still creates real benefits.

The key is to keep it light and low-pressure.

Pair Laughter with Your Breath

One of the simplest ways to practice on your own is to connect laughter with your breathing.

Try this:

  • Take a deep inhale

  • As you exhale, gently laugh: “haaaaa…”

  • Repeat a few times, letting the sound grow naturally if it wants to

This helps regulate your nervous system while inviting in lightness. It’s especially helpful if you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

Laugh With Your Emotions, Not Against Them

This has been one of the most meaningful parts of my own practice.

If you’re feeling stressed, frustrated, or even a little stuck—try acknowledging it first. Then gently invite laughter in alongside that feeling.

Not to push it away. Not to pretend everything is fine. But to soften the edges.

Sometimes it sounds like: “Okay… this is a lot… ha… ha…”

And slowly, something shifts.

It creates just enough space to breathe, to reset, and to feel a little more grounded.

Use Playfulness to Get Started

If it feels hard to begin, bring in a bit of play.

You might:

  • Make laughter sounds in the mirror (it works more than you think!)

  • Try a “silent laugh” with just your shoulders shaking

  • Make eye contact with yourself and smile

  • Recall something mildly funny—not your funniest memory, just something light

Often, the laughter becomes more natural once you get started.

Create a Simple Daily Ritual

Laughter doesn’t have to be spontaneous to be meaningful. You can build it into your day in small, supportive ways.

Maybe it’s:

  • A minute of laughter in the morning to set the tone

  • A reset between tasks

  • A way to transition out of your workday

Consistency matters more than duration. Even a minute a day can make a difference over time.

Let It Be Imperfect

Some days it will feel easy. Other days, it won’t.

Some days you’ll laugh freely. Other days it might feel forced or quiet or even a little silly.

That’s okay.

This isn’t about doing it “right.” It’s about showing up for yourself in a new way.

You’re Not as Alone as You Think

Even when you’re practicing on your own, you’re still connected to something bigger.

Every time you laugh, you’re tapping into a shared human experience—something universal, something deeply connecting.

And when you come back to a group, you’ll likely notice something has shifted. It feels more familiar. More accessible. More yours.

A Gentle Invitation

If you’ve experienced laughter yoga before, consider this your invitation to keep going—just in a way that fits your life.

And if you ever feel like you want to reconnect in a group setting, you’re always welcome.

If you’d like support in building your laughter practice—or simply want to experience the energy of laughing together again—I invite you to join an upcoming session or event.
